Sanya Nanfan Research Institute of Hainan University was inaugurated in Sanya Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City on July 17th, 2021. This is an important measure for Hainan University to be bold in undertaking the national mission and commit itself to building a local national strategic scientific and technological force. As an open and innovative sharing platform for Nanfan and efficient tropical agriculture, Sanya Nanfan Research Institute of Hainan University will provide one-stop and integrated high-level services for Nanfan Silicon Valley, National Center for Tropical Agricultural Sciences, Global Academic Exchange Center in Tropical Agriculture and Forestry Field and the Global Animal and Plant Germplasm Resources Transfer Base.
At present, there are more than 40 teams in Sanya Nanfan Research Institute of Hainan University, including over more than 700 teachers and students, including academicians, Cheungkong Scholars, "Jieqing", "Ten Thousand Talents Program" and other national talents. There are more than 46,000 square meters of Nafan Mass Innovation Center building, more than 200 million yuan of scientific research equipment, and nearly 3,500 mu of Nanfan experimental base, including 108 mu of National Salt-alkali Resistant Rice Technology Innovation Center scientific research base and more than 2,000 mu of Batou Nafan Public Service base. There exist National Salt-tolerant Rice Technology Innovation Center (co-construction) , National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center, Hainan Tropical Agricultural Engineering Technology Research Center, South Tropical Rice Breeding Seed Engineering Laboratory of Hainan province, South Tropical Rice Engineering Technology Research Center of Hainan province, and other scientific research platform. A series of landmark achievements have been made in the innovation of tropical crop varieties, the prevention and control of major diseases and insect pests of tropical crops, and the preservation and processing of tropical crops. The China (Sanya) International Rice Forum and "Belt and Road" Food Security Corridor Forum has been held four times in succession, and relevant scientific research achievements have been continuously promoted to countries along the belt and Road, such as Vietnam and Uzbekistan.
By 2025, the faculty and students of Sanya Nanfan Research Institute of Hainan University will reach 3000-5000. By 2030, Hainan University is expected to have 10,000 students in Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City. Sanya Nanfan Research Institute of Hainan University will strive to build it up a top-notch training base for innovative talents in tropical agriculture, National Nanfan Science and Technology Center, Transformation and Transfer Center of Scientific and Technological Achievements for Nanfang and Tropical Agriculture, Nanfan Major Scientific Research Base and Breeding Seed Testing Center, to contribute to the success of the seed industry, China's food security and the realization of the Chinese dream of national rejuvenation.
