Sanya Institute of China Agricultural University (referred to as Sanya Institute) was established in March 2020, and is an independent legal entity and public institution registered by China Agricultural University (referred to as CAU) in Sanya, Hainan Province. Sanya Institute is a secondary educational and scientific research institution outside of Beijing built by CAU to participate in and support the construction of Hainan Free Trade Port and Nanfan Agricultural Silicon Valley. Within the scope approved and authorized by CAU, Sanya Institute represents CAU to undertake tasks such as talent cultivation, scientific and technological innovation and achievement transformation, social services, as well as international cooperation and exchanges, with an unspecified administrative level. The Management Committee of Sanya Institute  is responsible for the working coordination and decision-making of Sanya Institute.

 

Sanya Institute relies on relevant CAU college to recruit students for Hainan Program based on the primary disciplines of Crop Science, Horticulture, Plant Protection, Agricultural Resources and Environment, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine. Currently, there are 417 graduate students, including 178 PhD students. Sanya Tropical Agriculture Postdoctoral Program has been set up based on the19 post-doctoral research stations of CAU, and recruits 27 postdoctoral researchers.

Sanya Institute shares the use of large-scale instrument and equipment center, classrooms, lecture halls, libraries, student cafeteria, fitness center and indoor sports field in the Innovation and Research Valley. In addition, the institute has built research platforms for the cultivation of high-level postgraduate talents, such as Nanfan seed industry, tropical agriculture, introduction of plant and animal germplasm resources, green agricultural development and veterinary public health, etc. In addition, the institute has also equipped itself with a crop breeding center, artificial climate chamber and histopathology room. At present,the total laboratory area is currently 15,500 square meters, with 2,000 sets of instruments and equipment worth more than 130million yuan.

 

In the future, two research buildings with a total investment of 1.1 billion  yuan and a construction area of 80,000 square meters will be completed and put into use in early 2024. The International Maize Technology Innovation and Outcome Transformation Center will provide an important science and technology platform for scientific research, talent cultivation, technology training and promotion in the field of entire maize industry research. The Hainan One Health (Veterinary Public Health) Research Center will provide an important research and development base for global One Healthdemonstration in Hainan. The 636-acre Nanfan seed experimental and demonstration base which is built in multiple high-quality ways, provides a basic guarantee for land research on Nanfan breeding and tropical agriculture research.

 

According to Sanya Institute’s “14th Five-Year Development Plan” , by 2025, it will become a domestically first-rate and internationally renowned base for talent training of Nanfan seed industry and tropical agriculture. By 2035, Sanya Institute will be initially established as a world-class center for talent cultivation, technological innovation, transformation of scientific outcomes and international cooperation and exchanges of Nanfan seed industry and tropical agriculture, becoming an important part of the new university system of CAU with Chinese characteristics and world-class agricultural features.
