Chongqing Medical University (CQMU), previously referred to as Chongqing Medical College, was founded in 1956 based on a branch of Shanghai First Medical College (now the Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University). CQMU is one of the first universities in China that are approved by the State Council Academic Degrees Committee to award doctoral and master’s degrees, and one of the first approved by the Ministry of Education to enroll foreign students. In 2015, it became a major public medical university that is jointly supported by the Ministry of Education, the National Health Commission of China, and Chongqing Municipal People’s Government.

CQMU offers 8 doctoral programmes in first-class disciplines and 14 master’s programmes in first-class disciplines, 4 doctoral professional degree programmes, and 12 master's professional degree programmes. The university has 4 state key disciplines and 11 disciplines ranking top 1% of ESI, of which Clinical Medicine has been listed in the top 1‰ of ESI. The university also has 2 municipal first-class disciplines and 16 municipal key disciplines in the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021–2025). 

CQMU boasts 83 national-level talents, including members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, overseas high-caliber talents, participants in national key talent programmes, and winners of the “National Science Fund for Outstanding Youth.” CQMU also has 1,470 provincial and ministerial-level talents. CQMU actively carries out exchanges and cooperation. It has established cooperation with 64 educational or healthcare institutions in Europe, Asia, North America, and Oceania, including the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom, Dartmouth College in the United States, the University of British Columbia in Canada, the University College London in the United Kingdom, and other world-renowned universities. CQMU-University of Leicester Joint Institute is the only Joint Education Institute (JEI) in central and western regions of China that focuses on medicine and offers clinical medicine specialties.

Currently, CQMU has 15 affiliated hospitals. The First Affiliated Hospital, The Second Affiliated Hospital, and Children's Hospital have stayed among the top 100 on Fudan University’s China Hospital Ranking for ten consecutive years. One affiliated hospital directly under its administration has been designated as the National Research Center in Clinical Medicine, and one as a national regional medical center. There are 48 national key clinical departments. These hospitals have a total of more than 24,000 beds, and receive 20 million outpatient visits and nearly 900,000 inpatient visits a year.
